2 youths charged following hours-long armed robbery probe in Fort Smith

Two youths are facing numerous firearms charges after an of an hours-long armed robbery investigation. 

Fort Smith RCMP say they responded to a call about an armed robbery early Tuesday morning, triggering a large-scale response from law enforcement that saw multiple police units, including the Alberta RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit called to the scene. 

According to Wednesday's news release, Yukon RCMP Emergency Response Teams, NWT RCMP Police Dog Services, Hay River RCMP and the RCMP Critical Incident Program also  responded. 

In a press release sent out Tuesday afternoon, police urged residents to avoid the Calder Avenue and Wilderness Road as there was a “situation unfolding.” People were asked to stay indoors. 

One suspect was eventually located apprehended at a residence in Fort Smith.

A second suspect was arrested Tuesday evening - hours after the initial response - at a home near Calder Avenue and Wilderness Road in the community, say police. 

No one was injured, according to RCMP. 

The pair are both under the age of 18 and cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

They face firearm and property-related charges.
