A 17-year-old male faces drug trafficking charges after Mounties say they seized 17 ounces of crack cocaine in Inuvik last week.

The “large amount” of drugs was seized at the Inuvik Mike Zubko Airport on May 14, according to an RCMP news release issued two days after the bust.

Mounties did not elaborate on the circumstances of the seizure, including where the crack cocaine, packed into three large bags, was found at the airport.

Located on Airport Road, the airport sits 12 kilometres from Inuvik.

Police are applauding the seizure in preventing harmful substances from hitting the streets.

“Our police officers are committed to removing illicit drugs and the associated potential danger from our streets,” Inuvik RCMP Sgt. Olena Newmen stated in the release.

The male, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is charged with trafficking cocaine, possessing cocaine for the purpose of trafficking and breach of a recognizance.
