Sanikiluaq votes to remain a 'dry' community

Sanikiluaq residents voted 63 per cent in favour of remaining a prohibited community in a plebiscite held Monday, according to the GN Department of Finance.

"At this time, the residents of Sanikiluaq have decided that the community should remain prohibited. If at a later date residents wish to revisit the matter, a request for a new plebiscite can be sent to the Minister of Finance,” Finance Minister George Hickes said.

Consumption, possession, purchase, sale or transport of liquor will continue to be outlawed in Sanikiluaq.

Under the Liquor Act, at least 60 per cent of voters are needed to change the status of a community from prohibited to restricted quantities.

Kugaaruk will hold a liquor plebiscite on Feb. 25, as residents of that community will also decide whether to remain on alcohol prohibited status or move to allowing restricted quantities.
