Rabies confirmed in Baker Lake

A fox caught in Baker Lake has tested positive for rabies, according to the territorial Department of Health, which issued a news release on Nov. 16.

The GN warned residents earlier this month that fox sightings had been increasing in several communities.

Anyone who has had any contact with a fox, particularly those who have been bitten or scratched, are urged to visit the local health centre and give details of the incident. Rabies is a virus that affects the central nervous system and can lead to inflammation of the brain and even death. Early symptoms include headaches, fever and general weakness or discomfort, according to Centers for Disease Control. Treatment is more effective if it starts early.

Conservation officers or regional environmental health officers should be called if foxes are seen wandering around the community, especially if they're acting strange or if they have had contact with your dog.
