Polar bear kills Arviat man

A polar bear attacked and killed a 31-year-old Arviat man on Tuesday, according to the RCMP.

The fatal incident occurred on Sentry Island, about 10 km outside of the community. The man, who was unarmed, was pronounced dead at the scene after medical professionals and police scrambled to assist him after a report of the attack came in at 7:42 p.m.

Other residents were nearby and one of them shot and killed the polar bear, the RCMP stated.

Mounties in Arviat are continuing to assist the Office of the Chief Coroner in the investigation.
