Scholarship opportunity

Kivalliq

Kivalliq students are reminded that they have until March 31 to apply for one of the full scholarships available for 40 youth across the North to participate in the Students on Ice (SOI) 2018 Arctic Expedition taking place this coming summer from July 21 to Aug. 7.

SOI is an award-winning organization taking high school and university students from around the world on the educational journey of a lifetime to explore the eastern Canadian Arctic and western Greenland.

With the support of SOI's partners, a majority of the participants on the organization's Arctic Expeditions are fully funded to participate.

More than 40 per cent of student-and-staff participants are from the circumpolar Arctic, with a majority from Canada's North.

Since SOI began 18 years ago, more than 2,700 students and educators from 52 countries have participated in its transformational journeys.

They form an alumni family that is connected by their experiences, and provides ongoing support to fellow expeditioners as mentors, teachers and lifelong friends.

Interested Kivalliq students can find the application form online at studentsonice.com.

Kiviuq returns

Arviat/Rankin Inlet

Arviat and Rankin Inlet were scheduled to be the Kivalliq stops in the Qaggiavuut Society's Kivalliq and Kitikmeot youth workshop and performance tour by cast and crew members of the Inuit play, Kiviuq Returns, including Inuit music, storytelling, costumes and digital design.

The performance troupe was scheduled to be in Arviat this past week, Feb. 8-10, and in Rankin Inlet on March 1.

Other stops in the tour include Kugluktuk, Cambridge Bay and Kugaaruk.

Kiviuq Returns is based on Inuit legends and the writing is supported by the knowledge of a group of elders that includes Miriam Aglukark, Susan Avingaq, Qaunaq Mikigaq and Madeline Ivalu. The elders are also the show's dramaturgists.

The pan-Nunavut cast and crew are scheduled to spend about four weeks on tour to the five communities to train youth and perform Kiviuq Returns in each community.

Health careers

Arviat

Naujaat and Arviat students are among the 20 Inuit students from six communities across Nunavut who are participating in a health careers camp in Iqaluit this week, from Feb. 12 to 16.

The camp's home base is at Nunavut Arctic College (NAC) in the capital city, with camp activities taking place at the Qikiqtani General Hospital and NAC's simulation lab and classrooms.

During their time at the camp, the youth will learn about the many possible health careers they could pursue.

They will also experience hands-on clinical skills such as putting on a cast and suturing, among many other activities.

The pilot project is intended to promote health careers among Nunavummiut and is based on a similar health career camp for youth designed by the Northern Ontario School of Medicine.
