Modular classrooms almost ready

Six modular classrooms for Kugaaruk students are expected to be turned over to the Government of Nunavut this week. The modular units, which can each hold up to 22 students, arrived during sealift in late August and a contractor has been preparing them for use.

The government is scheduled to take possession of the buildings on Oct. 27 and school staff may need a few days to get things in place, according to a statement from the Department of Education. A start date will be announced to the community once the timing is finalized, according to the department.

High school students began classes on Sept. 18, while kindergarten to Grade 9 students began their year on Sept. 19. They have been receiving lessons at the renovated former hamlet office, the business development centre, the wellness centre and the Nunavut Housing Corporation boardroom.

Foundation work on the community's new school should be complete by the end of the year, according to the Department of Education. The building is expected to be ready for the 2019 school year.

Kugaardjuk School was destroyed by fire in late February, creating the need for a new education facility and temporary accommodations.
