Iqaluit RCMP arrest man following daylong standoff

Iqaluit police have a man in custody after a standoff that interrupted traffic and led to evacuations in the 100 to 300 blocks of Nipisa Street during the day.

There's no further danger and residents can safely return to their homes, the Mounties stated in a news release Wednesday evening.

Three young children are now safely in the custody of Child and Family Services following the incident, which prompted bulletins to advise residents of potential hazards throughout the day as crisis negotiations took place.

The RCMP expressed their thanks to Iqaluit residents for their patience as the situation was managed.

The police department indicated further details about the ordeal would be made public on Friday morning.
