An Iqaluit city councillor has offered a public apology after posting a "racialized statement" on social media yesterday, according to the City of Iqaluit.

In a news release issued Thursday afternoon, the city didn't specify who the councillor was or provide details on the comments.

Mayor Kenny Bell stated that he's aware of the controversial social media post.

“City councillors are held accountable to following the city’s code of conduct and human rights and anti-harassment policy. Council will be discussing this together at the next city council meeting and will take this opportunity to look at additional ways to educate council on racism, biases, and other social discrimination," Bell said. "City councillors represent the entire community and we will respect the diverse nature of all our citizens.”

The municipal news release also stated that the social media post in question does not represent the views of city council.

Residents who would like to submit concerns to city staff are asked to file a complaint through the city's website at: https://www.iqaluit.ca/complaints-and-compliments.
