Grateful for an elders feast

Residents in Kugluktuk have been holding a Thanksgiving feast for elders for 15 years and they did it again this October.

The elementary school hosts the event. Teachers and students are central in organizing the occasion, but there are many other volunteers, according to educator Naomi Tremblay.

“It is truly a community affair,” she said.

Scores of people came to Jimmy Hikok Ilihakvik to savour a Thanksgiving dinner earlier this month. School staff and the Ilavut Centre cook the cooked the turkeys. The Kugluktuk Greenhouse donated the salad greens. Brighter Futures, the Northern store, the Enokhok Inn, Hamlet of Kugluktuk staff, the RCMP and the Kugluktuk home care team also pitched in. If the food alone wasn’t enough to induce a smile, a hug would do the trick. Doris Kallak, left, and Helen Whitaker share a friendly embrace.
