City of Iqaluit reopening outdoor facilities as of Monday; indoor facilities remain closed

The City of Iqaluit announced Friday that it will reopen its playgrounds, basketball courts, trails and parks as of Monday.

This is possible because of the chief public health officer's May 25 announcement that a relaxing of Covid-19 outdoor restrictions can be permitted as of June 1.

In a news release, the city urged residence to heed the limit of 25 people at any outdoor site and to maintain social distancing, but also encouraged Iqalummiut "to remain active, get outside, and take advantage of the longer days and warmer weather. However, it is advised that residents use caution on the trails during the seasonal melt."

The following indoor facilities remain closed: Arctic Winter Games Complex, Arnaitok arena, aquatic centre, curling rink, Elder’s Qammaq and the Makkuttukkuvik Youth Centre.

The municipality indicated that it will reassess cancellations and closures again on June 6.
