Capitalizing on science

Three Kitikmeot students will be boarding flights to Ottawa in May to compete in the Canada-Wide Science Fair. The pupils earned spots at the national competition by placing in the top three at the Kitikmeot Science Fair in Kugluktuk on April 7.

Joni Karoo, who attends Netsilik School in Taloyoak, was first overall with her project on syphilis. The judges gave second place to Jordan Takkiruq of Gjoa Haven for his effort, titled the "turm'oil of fat." Taloyoak's Holly Tulurialik secured third place with her project: clear ice versus cloudy ice.

Thirteen students participated in the Kitikmeot Science Fair.

Karoo, Takkiruq and Tulurialik now get to travel to the nation's capital May 12-19 to see what their peers across Canada bring to the table.

"They will collaborate and interact with hundreds of students from across Canada while enjoying some activities around the city," said Lauren McFadden, president of Science for Kitikmeot Youth and Educators.
