AROUND KIVALLIQ: Happy Birthday

The Rankin Inlet Fitness Centre celebrated its birthday on March 1, marking its fifth year serving the community.

The fitness centre first opened its doors on March 1, 2014 and, since that time, it has grown to have five staff members serving a membership that is now in excess of 100 strong.
The Rankin Inlet Fitness Centre also remains Nunavut's sole not-for-profit gym.

 

Repair program

Arviat

The Nunavut Literacy Council in partnership with JL Repair is set to deliver a free 10-day workshop on small engine repair in Arviat from March 11 to 22.
The course will be based on a supportive learning environment with lots of hands-on experience.
The course will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday and is funded by the Department of Family Services.
However, the deadline to apply for the course passed yesterday, March 6.


Old-timers glory

Coral Harbour

Coral Harbour defeated Rankin Inlet 5-4 in a thrilling championship game to claim the 2019 Kivalliq Cup old-timers championship in Rankin Inlet on Feb. 24.

Rankin Inlet

The incredible string of competitive hockey tournaments in Rankin Inlet is finally coming to an end with the Bantam Rock Cup being hosted this past weekend and the Terence Tootoo Memorial (TTM) senior men's championship being held this week.
Five teams competed in the bantam championship with the host Rankin Rock being joined by Arviat/Whale Cove, Baker Lake, Naujaat/Chesterfield Inlet and Coral Harbour in the chase for championship glory.
Final results in the bantam tourney were not known as of press time.
There are expected to be 10 teams competing in two divisions – A and B – in this year's TTM which gets underway tonight, March 6 and runs until playoff on March 10.
