Yellowknife Education District No. 1 is in need of a new superintendent/CEO as incumbent Jameel Aziz has served notice that he’s moving to Prince George, B.C., to take on a similar role there as of March 25.

YK1 announced Aziz’s pending departure on Friday.

“The experience he brought from British Columbia has helped guide the district through the planning and roll out of his year’s launch of the B.C.-based curriculum,” Yk1 stated in a news release. “His professionalism and dedication to the district benefitted all of us at YK1.

“We know that Jameel is committed to creating a smooth transition over the coming months as we begin the recruitment process. We are confident that with our experienced district leadership team in place, this will happen without impacting our classrooms,” the news release continues.

Yk1 added that it intends to use a recruiting firm to identify Aziz’s successor as it casts a net across the NWT and the rest of the country.

Aziz started as YK1 superintendent/CEO in Yellowknife in August 2022, replacing Dr. Cindi Vaselenak.
