Typical power bills will be climbing close to $20 per month in Nunavut if Qulliq Energy Corporation (QEC) is granted approval for an additional charge due to rising fuel prices.

An extra 3.7 cents per kilowatt hour per would go into effect from April 1 to Sept. 30, should the territory’s Utility Rates Review Council find the application justifiable.

“The requested fuel rider is related to the increase in territorial fuel prices announced in January,” stated John Main, minister responsible for QEC, in an April 3 news release.

Customers who use approximately 500 kilowatt hours per month can expect an increase of approximately $19.41 (including GST) on their monthly bill, if the fuel rider is adopted.

“QEC customers can expect the charge to be automatically applied to their monthly bills, starting with the April utility bill, with the exception of public housing tenants who are subsidized under Nunavut Housing Corporation’s program,” said James Arreak, acting president and CEO of QEC.

More information on QEC’s fuel rider application is available at www.qec.nu.ca.
