From Clarence Wood, mayor of Inuvik

I am advocating for a cause that is not only crucial for the residents of the Northwest Territories but also for the sustainable development of our region. I am here to argue that the NWT should be exempt from the carbon tax that has been implemented in various parts of our country. While recognizing the importance of addressing climate change and reducing carbon emissions, I believe that a nuanced approach is necessary, especially for regions like the NWT, which face unique challenges.

The NWT is characterized by its vast and remote geography, with a harsh climate that poses significant challenges to its residents. The majority of the population relies heavily on natural resources and traditional practices for their livelihoods. Unlike more densely populated regions, our communities are often isolated, and access to alternative energy sources is limited. Imposing a carbon tax in such a context will inadvertently burden our residents without providing viable alternatives or recognizing the distinct challenges we face.

The implementation of a carbon tax in the NWT has resulted in increased costs for essential goods and services, impacting the already high cost of living. Additionally, it will jeopardize the economic viability of industries that are critical to our region, such as resource extraction and traditional subsistence activities. Small businesses, which are the backbone of many Northern communities, will face hardships that have already led to closures and job losses.

Moreover, it is crucial to acknowledge that the NWT has a relatively low carbon footprint compared to more industrialized regions in the country. Punishing our residents with a carbon tax without taking into account the unique circumstances of our region would be unfair and counterproductive. Instead, a more collaborative and supportive approach is needed to address the environmental concerns while ensuring the economic stability of our communities.

To truly combat climate change, we must invest in sustainable and innovative solutions that are tailored to the specific needs of the Northwest Territories. This includes supporting research and development of alternative energy sources that are practical and feasible in our remote and challenging environment. By exempting the NWT from the carbon tax, we can create an environment that encourages the development and adoption of these technologies, fostering long-term sustainability.

In conclusion, while I recognize the importance of addressing climate change and reducing carbon emissions, I believe that a one-size-fits-all approach is not suitable for regions like the NWT. Imposing a carbon tax without considering our unique challenges will have detrimental effects on our economy and the well-being of our residents. I urge policymakers to work collaboratively with our communities, supporting initiatives that promote sustainability and acknowledging the distinct circumstances of the NWT. Together, we can strike a balance that ensures a healthy environment and a prosperous future for all.

Thank you.
