If you’re out on the lakes, make sure whatever you’re stepping on is both safe and solid.

The city sent out an advisory Wednesday afternoon urging residents to exercise caution when venturing on the ice of the lakes surrounding the city after a large hole was spotted on Yellowknife Bay. The release stated the city received information that a large hole has been spotted between Joliffe Island and Old Town.

”Ice conditions may be unpredictable and may change significantly from one area to the next, especially because of the milder conditions seen this winter,” it read.

Those who are going out on the ice by any means are being reminded to look out for signs of weak ice, such as cracks, slush, or open water, and avoid them; go with a partner and tell someone where you are going and when you plan to come back; bring dry clothing and an emergency kit, including matches, in case you get wet or stuck on the ice.

If you are in a group, especially when snowmobiling, don’t cluster together when you stop, to prevent putting too much weight on the ice and have a way to communicate, such as a cell phone or a radio, to call for help if you fall through the ice or run into trouble.

The warning also cautioned people to stay away from the rivers, as the moving water under the ice makes it very thin even in cold temperatures

And if you don’t know how thick the ice is, drill a test hole or just don’t go on the ice at all.

If there’s any sign of danger or if you see someone has fallen through the ice or is in distress, you’re asked to call 9-1-1 right away.
