A Jean Marie River resident has been charged with manslaughter in relation to the death of a Fort Simpson woman.

The accused, Alison Sanguez, 27, is being held in custody. She has a court appearance set for Feb. 14.

The death occurred on Jan. 19 in a Fort Simpson residence.

The community’s RCMP and the NWT Office of the Chief Coroner initially conducted a joint investigation. After a medical examination, it was determined that the woman’s death was the result of a homicide. The Northwest Territories RCMP’s Major Crime Unit then took over the investigation.

The individual who died was not identified in an RCMP news release issued Monday afternoon.
