Inuvik RCMP have charged the driver of a 2021 fatal single vehicle car crash on the Inuvik-Tuktoyaktuk in the death of the vehicle’s passenger.

Police formally charged the male, who has not been named, with one count of impaired operation of a conveyance causing death on Jan. 30 following an investigation. He will appear in Inuvik Territorial Court on March 12.

A female, who was not named in the release, died on Aug. 8, 2021 approximately 26 kilometres North of Inuvik. When police arrived, they found her and the driver, who was injured. He was taken to hospital for treatment, where police formed grounds to believe he was not just the driver but also impaired. He was arrested at the hospital and samples of blood were seized and sent to forensic analysis.

Toxicology results confirmed the man’s blood alcohol content was “at least 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100mL of blood,” says the release. RCMP “G” division traffic services dispatched a collision reconstructionist to collect additional evidence to the crown’s case.

Anyone with information into the accident is asked to call Inuvik RCMP at (867) 777-1111 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or www.nwtnu.crimestoppersweb.com. In the event of an emergency call, 911.
