A Fort Simpson woman wanted on an arrest warrant turned herself in to the local RCMP detachment on Dec. 15.

During a subsequent search, RCMP officers allegedly discovered close to 250 grams of crack-cocaine and various items of drug paraphernalia in her possession.

Police say it remains unclear why the woman brought these items to the RCMP detachment.

The accused is identified as 37-year-old Krista Okrainec, who was promptly taken into custody and has been charged with possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

That was one of 305 incidents that NWT RCMP dealt with between the evening of Friday, Dec. 15 to the morning of Monday, Dec. 18.

In Inuvik, traffic enforcement officers stopped a suspected drunk driver on Dec. 16. The 34-year-old female driver from Inuvik failed a roadside screening test and was arrested. Breath samples taken at the Inuvik RCMP detachment confirmed that she was over the legal limit. The driver now faces charges of impaired driving and driving while over the legal alcohol limit. This incident is part of Operation Gingerbread, a month-long traffic safety initiative aimed at keeping roads safe from impaired drivers.

Later that same day in Hay River, RCMP officers on patrol noticed a snowmobile driving on the highway around 9:30 p.m. The snowmobile’s headlight was not functioning, and its two passengers were not wearing helmets. The driver was suspected to be under the influence of alcohol and failed a roadside screening test. Breath samples taken at the Hay River detachment confirmed that the 31-year-old male driver from the Hay River area was over the legal limit. He now faces charges of impaired driving and driving over the legal limit.
