A Tuesday evening fire in a townhouse on Gitzel Street forced firefighters to attack it from a neighbouring unit.

Members of the Yellowknife Fire Division were unable to enter the unit directly because the blaze started in the crawlspace and burned through the main floor.

The flames worked their way through the walls and into the attic, but firefighters managed to contain it from that point.

“A comprehensive inspection was conducted to ensure the fire was completely extinguished. During this assessment, fire was discovered in the wall spaces between the two units. No additional flames or areas of concern were identified,” the City of Yellowknife stated in a news release on Wednesday.

Due to the nature of the fire, Yellowknife Fire Division has returned to the scene a couple times to fight additional flare-ups in the Gitzel Street townhomes.

The incident has now been handed over to the Office of the Fire Marshal for further investigation. Updates will be provided as the investigation progresses, the municipality stated.

NNSL media has contacted the Office of the Fire Marshal, but no response was immediately available.
