Dettah ice crossing finally opens at record-late date

The Dettah ice road opened to vehicles weighing less than 5,000 kilograms on Sunday at approximately 2 p.m. The construction of the Dettah ice road had started the previous Wednesday afternoon.

“This is the latest opening date for the Dettah ice road that the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has on record,” said Darren Campbell, a communications person with the GNWT Department of Infrastructure.

According to the GNWT website, the average opening date for the Dettah ice road is Dec. 24, and it typically closes on April 16.
