If you get a letter claiming to be from the vice president of the RCMP accusing you of “cyber-pornography”, RCMP say it’s a fraud and don’t send the senders any money.

RCMP say they’ve received complaints about a letter purporting to be from “Vice-President/Director Phillippe Villaroel” and signed by “Chief Justice of Canada Robert Wagner” that accuses the addressed of several sexual offences and demanding a cash payment to prevent further legal escalation, including media exposure and seizure of electronics. RCMP say the letter is fraudulent.

“These letters were not sent by the RCMP and residents are advised not to respond to them or send any money to the senders,” said NT RCMP media relations officer Cpl. Matt Halstead. “Anyone who has received a letter similar to this is asked to contact their local detachment. So far, the letters have been reported by recipients in Fort Smith and have been received in emails and also via regular post. Anyone who receives a letter of this nature in the mail is asked to bring the letter and the mailing envelope it was received in, to the local RCMP detachment.

“Anyone who receives correspondence from the RCMP and has concerns regarding its authenticity, can always contact their local detachment and get confirmation. The RCMP will not ask for money from residents and legal court documents are either served in person or, in some cases, sent via registered mail.”
