“You’re going to hear a lot of stories tonight,” begins emcee Joanasie Akumalik, as he introduces ArcticNet’s traditional evening cultural events.

The Dec. 5 performances followed a day of scientific sharing and discussions at the Aqsarniit Centre in Iqaluit. There was storytelling, drum dancing, and throat-singing from Solomon Awa, Haugaaq Ogina, Jerry Puglik, Dorothy Aglukark and David Serkoak.

“Although there are many issues because of lack of trust, [those] issues are now progressing, and being inputted to bridge the connection” among all kinds of peoples, Inuit and settlers alike, from all over the Arctic Circle and the rest of Canada, according to Akumalik.

It is through performances such as these that the cultural knowledge and traditions are shared and passed down to a new generation.
