Yk Scouts rev up their engines at annual Kar Rally

Yellowknife Beavers, Cubs and Scouts made their own fun during the annual Kar Rally held June 9 in the Co-op parking lot.

Shellie Trimble, group commissioner of the Yellowknife Scouts, said the long-standing event is always held in June and has been part of Scouts for at least 40 years and is an opportunity for the scouting group to show their talent.

“The concept is that the kids build their own vehicles. It comes from a kit that you can purchase through Scouts Canada, and they build them and they decorate them. As they get older, they learn a little bit more about aerodynamics and what will make the car go faster and then design their vehicle for themselves.

“And then when you get to Scouts trucks, there's some really creative things happening,” Trimble said of the designs that can take months of preparation and are often themed, with one example being Star Wars.

“People have taken a lot of effort and decorated and designed their Scout trucks, so it takes a little bit longer.”

During the Sunday event, vehicles were lined up on the aluminum racetrack to race to the finish line and winners were announced in each category.

The winning entries were:
