Environment Canada has declared a heat warning for Fort McPherson and Tsiigehtchic as of 3:57 p.m. June 24.

"Very hot conditions are expected starting Tuesday, with daily high temperatures near 30 degrees Celsius and early morning lows near 14 degrees Celsius, said the notice. "The heat will continue until this weekend. Extreme heat can affect everyone’s health. The health risks are greater for older adults, infants and young children, pregnant people, people with physical and/or mental illnesses, and people with disabilities or mobility issues. Watch for the effects of heat illness: swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the worsening of some health conditions.

"Drink plenty of water regularly, even before you feel thirsty to decrease your risk of dehydration. Thirst is not a good indicator of dehydration. Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature or humidity conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion."

Northwest Territories Power Corporation says they are aware of the situation and are monitoring. Crews will be dispatched as safe as possible in the event of a power outage to either community.
