A snowmobiler practices his airtime prior to the men's open cross country in Fort McPherson in 2022. The Peel River Ice Crossing is now on 24 hours notice but could close sooner if warming continues.

The Peel River Ice crossing is edging closer to its spring closure.

An update was published by the GNWT on May 9.

As of 11:40 a.m., the Peel River Ice Crossing is on 24 hours notice.

“Depending on weather conditions the Ice Bridges may close with little or no notice,” reads the notice. “Low clearance vehicles are not recommended to travel on the Peel and Mackenzie River ice crossings as well as the Tsiigehtchic access ice crossings at this time.

“Historical Statistics show the Peel River ice crossing was closed in early May, the Mackenzie River ice crossing was closed on average about the second week in May and the Tsiigehtchic winter access was closed in early May.”

The Dempster Highway is currently open but weight restrictions may be in place on the Yukon side. The Inuvik-Tuktoyaktuk Highway is open, with narrow sections between kilometres 26 and 30. Drivers are advised to expect delays and be on the watch for equipment working, particularly between kilometres 26 and 70.

Winter access to Tsiigehtchic, the Mackenzie River Ice Crossing and the Aklavik Ice Road have officially closed for the season.
