Well, it was good while it lasted.

Inuvik's swimming pool has closed, effective immediately, as of 5 p.m. June 6.

The news was released by the town on its social media feed.

"During regular maintenance checks our facilities staff discovered a significant concern with the pool foundation," reads the notice. "This requires immediate action to drain the pool and implement a comprehensive assessment of the pool structure. Pending the findings of this assessment, necessary repairs will be actioned.
"Our team is working diligently to mitigate further damage, ensure the safety of staff and users and minimize the impact of the closure for user groups and sponsors."

Town staff are reaching out to user groups to explain the situation and assess disruptions to their planned use of the facility.

As the pool was literally being drained as the announcement was posted, the notice added the town has no estimate as to how long the needed repairs will take — or even the total extent of repairs needed.

"We understand that the pool is a cherished Community amenity, and we are committed to restoring it as quickly as possible while ensuring all safety standards prior to resuming operations," said the notice. "The Town of Inuvik apologizes for the inconvenience and appreciates your patience during this challenging time."

Closed for over three years after the Covid-19 pandemic first forced its shut down and then successive technical problems prevented re-opening, the pool finally re-opened in October. Enthusiasm for it's re-opening has been significant, with usage during public swims free of charge because groups have been sponsoring the costs of admission.
