The Dettah ice road will be shut for the season this morning starting at 10 a.m.

A post on X, formerly Twitter, from the Department of Infrastructure Monday morning indicated that warmer weather and run-off water in the surrounding area are the main reasons for the closure.

“We will only close the road once the water level on the Yellowknife side is too deep for low clearance vehicles,” stated a spokesperson from the Department of Infrastructure in response to questions from NNSL Media about the road last week. “Typically, it is the Yellowknife side that melts quicker due to the low water levels.”

The road is closing around the same time as it did last year; things were shut down on Apr. 10 last year.

The road opened this season on Jan. 29, much later than usual and that has been a trend for the past couple years. The department confirmed in a previous interview that it was the latest opening on record.
