Dempster Highway ferries to open at Noon but ITH washed out again

The Mackenzie River Ferry at Tsiigehtchic — and the Peel River Ferry at Fort McPherson — will both open for service at noon June 6.

UPDATE 5: As of 10:44 a.m. June 4, the Mackenzie River ferry has re-opened.

 

UPDATE 4: As of 9:48 a.m. June 4, the Mackenzie River ferry is closed again due to maintenance. The Peel River Ferry's scheduled opening has not changed. The Inuvik-Tuktoyaktuk Highway has re-opened.

 

UPDATE 3: As of 5:33 p.m., June 3, the GNWT now says the Peel River Ferry will open late afternoon June 4.

 

UPDATE 2: As of 11:56 a.m., June 3, the GNWT now says the Peel River Ferry will open at 5 p.m. and the Mackenzie River Ferry has officially opened.

 

UPDATE: An 11:08 a.m. June 3 notice from the GNWT says the ferries are now in operation.

 

Ferry service at the Peel River and Mackenzie River crossings will commend at noon today.

An update was issued by the GNWT on June 2.

"Please drive according to all road conditions, follow all speed limits, watch for workers and equipment working; and expect uneven surfaces, as well as slippery and narrow sections throughout all roads," says the notice. "Standing water patches throughout all roads this time of year. Remember to always use your headlights and seatbelts."

The Inuvik-Tuktoyaktuk Highway, which had washed out last week but was re-opened the next day, has washed out a second time at kilometre 25. Prior to that the road was limited to single lane traffic at sections and a weight limit of 6,000 kilograms.
