Kivalliq
Former students who lived at the Kivalliq Hall residence in Rankin Inlet between June 12, 1985 and Dec. 31, 1997 are now entitled to compensation after years of legal battles with the federal government.
The case against Kivalliq Hall was started in 2012 by Baker Lake MLA Simeon Mikkungwak, a former student at the residence.
He argued the residence and the students who went there should be considered as part of the 2007 Residential School Settlement.
The case originally ruled in Mikkungwak's favour in 2016, but the federal government appealed the decision. The Nunavut Court of Appeals quashed the fed's challenge last summer, upholding the original ruling.
Former students can apply for a common experience payment of $10,000 for the first year and $3,000 for each additional year.
The application deadline for Kivalliq Hall claims is Jan. 25, 2020.
Sports teams celebrated with square dance
Baker Lake
Baker Lake held a square dance June 15 to celebrate the achievements of the community's young athletes.
The dance was organized to recognize the bronze medals won by the boys and girls midget hockey teams — who scored bronze medals at tournaments earlier this year — as well as those who are currently trying out for the upcoming Arctic Winter Games.
Athletes from the winning teams were asked to wear their medals to the dance.
Man accused of causing disturbance on flight arrested
Chesterfield Inlet
A man from Chesterfield Inlet was arrested after a flight crew reported a disturbance on a flight from Winnipeg to Rankin Inlet on June 7.
RCMP were dispatched to the Rankin Inlet airport to meet an inbound flight from Winnipeg after receiving a report about an unruly passenger who was causing a disturbance on the plane, stated a police news release.
Upon the aircraft’s arrival, Mounties boarded the plane and arrested the passenger, who reportedly continued to cause a disturbance after landing.
A 25-year-old man from Chesterfield Inlet has been charged with several Criminal Code and Aeronautics Act offences. His next scheduled court date is June 12.
Kivalliq Wellness Tour
Whale Cove/Baker Lake
Agnico Eagle is hosting a wellness tour across several Kivalliq communities. The tour includes performances by magician Brian Glow and drum dancer Shelton Nipisar, as well as a painting workshop run by Jennifer Hicks.
There will also be screenings of the critically acclaimed move The Grizzlies, based on the true story of the first lacrosse team from Kugluktuk, one that went on to compete in a national tournament.
The tour was in Whale Cove last weekend and will be in Baker Lake on June 21 and 22.
Girls soccer camp
Rankin Inlet
There will a summer soccer camp for girls taking place in Rankin Inlet on June 22. The camp is open to girls ages 6 to 12.
There are 30 sports available on a first-come first-served basis. The deadline to apply is June 20.
