AROUND KIVALLIQ: Kind donation

The Northern pharmacy made a $5,000 donation to the Rankin Rock peewee team that is travelling to Edmonton, Alta., to compete in the annual Spring Festival on Ice tournament that takes place from March 25 to 31.

Crew members recognized

Rankin Inlet

Rankin Inlet Fire Chief Mark Wyatt issued a statement on International Women's Day to recognize the female members of the Rankin Inlet Fire Department and ambulance/rescue service.
Wyatt personally recognized the contributions of female firefighters Catherine Tatty Kabvitok, Pam Pilakapsi, Hannah Hutchinson, Katie Bell, Meagan Netser, Maryann Aksadjuak and the department's newest recruit, Katauyak Everard.
He also noted the contributions of the department's female part time medical responders, Alayna Ningeongan and Grachel D'Cunha.

Youth charged

Rankin Inlet

Officers from the Rankin Inlet detachment of the RCMP responded to a report of suspicious activity outside the Rankin Inlet Sport and Community Centre at approximately 2:45 a.m. on March 3.
Upon arrival, the officers located and arrested a 16-year-old youth in the process of breaking-and-entering into the hockey rink section of the building
The youth, who is from Rankin Inlet, has been charged with five offenses under the Criminal Code.
The youth has been remanded into custody and has a court appearance scheduled for March 25 in Iqaluit.


Old-timer's travel

Baker Lake

The Baker Lake Grey Wolves old timer's team travelled to Niagara Falls, Ont., to compete in a weekend hockey tournament in the aged 45 to 50 division this past weekend.
The Grey Wolves won their first game against KF Const Journeymen from Ontario this past Friday, March 8, by a score of 8-3.
Final results of the tournament were not known as of press time.


Terence Tootoo Memorial tournament results

Rankin Inlet/Kivalliq

Twelve teams participated in the annual Terence Tootoo Memorial senior men's hockey tournament in Rankin Inlet held March 6 to 10.
This year's tourney marked the first time so many teams participated in the event. It was also the first time the Terence Tootoo Memorial crowned both A Division and B Division champions.
Former NHLer and brother of Terence Tootoo, Jordin Tootoo, travelled home to Rankin Inlet to suit-up for the Miners in the tourney.
Final results of the event were not known as of press time. Listed below are the 12 teams that competed in the tournament in both divisions.
