A minor structure fire at Raven Street in Inuvik was doused with fire extinguishers by the occupants of the building and put to rest by Inuvik Fire Department on Sept. 16.

Inuvik Fire department was called to the house at approximately 10 a.m. after the occupants smelled smoke and evacuated the building. Smoke was observed on the exterior of the building and attacked with fire extinguishers.

"The quick actions of the individuals on scene prevented the fire from growing," said fire chief Cynthia Hammond in a press release. "There were no injuries to the occupants."

Hammond said the duty officer arrived within two minutes of the call and used a second fire extinguisher to help put out the fire. Two minutes after, two fire apparatus and 11 personnel arrived to finish the job and prevent the fire from spreading through the exterior walls of the house.

Power and gas were shut off from the house and Raven Street was closed to traffic while fire operations were conducted.

The fire was declared out and fire operations ceased just after 11 a.m.

Initially identified as an electrical fire, the fire department now says the cause of the fire remains undetermined and under investigation. However, Hammond said the cause of the fire was not suspicious.
