Inuvik's third squash tournament of the year a success

Inuvik's third squash tournament of the year was a success, according to organizer Britney Selina.

"It's been a lot of fun," said Selina. "We've got quite a few players registered of different calibre playing in the tournament this week."

The squash tournament took place from May 10-12. Players faced off in the evenings on Thursday and Friday, and played all day Saturday.

Selina said there are three divisions playing in the tournament: semi-beginner, also known as the Old Timers league; semi-intermediate, also known as the Fake it Til You Make It league; and semi-pro, also known as the We're Awesome league.

"We're all just a bunch of amateurs out here to have fun," she said. "That's why everything is only semi-this, semi-that."

She said instead of swag, this tournament is offering up some different prizes.

"This tournament we did cash prizes, so for each of the three divisions, the winner will take home $50," she said.

The squash tournament took place at the Midnight Sun Recreation Centre from May 10-12.

This third tournament was also a celebration for one of the players.

"It's Stacey Christie's 50th birthday," said Selina. "So we're all here playing squash and celebrating her birthday at the same time."

According to Selina, there will be one squash tournament coming up this summer, as most squash players move to tennis around this time of year because the weather is nice enough to play outside.

For future tournaments, she encourages anyone from Inuvik who is interested in squash – no matter how much experience they have – to come try out the sport.

"We encourage people from the community to come out and play," she said. "All levels are welcome, but if you don't want to play, come out to watch the show."
