Inuvik's Team Bain to compete at 2019 Canada Winter Games
The 2019 Canada Winter Games (CWG) trials were held at the Inuvik Curling Club Feb. 23 to
25.
Inuvik's Team Bain qualified to compete in the games and will represent the Northwest
Territories.
Team Bain won three out of four games against a team from Hay River.

The boys' team from Inuvik also competed at the trials against Team Kaeser from Fort Smith.
Team Kaeser won all three of its games and will represent the Northwest Territories in the 2019
CWG.
The 27th edition of the games will feature 19 sports, including curling, and an arts and cultural
festival.
The games will be held in Red Deer, Alberta from February 15 to March 3, 2019.
GAC finalizing Planet's remote sensing licence
Global Affairs Canada (GAC) spokesperson Brendan Sutton said it is working closely with
Planet Labs and KSAT AS towards finalizing their remote sensing operating licence.
San Francisco-based satellite company Planet announced Feb. 13 that it will remove its Inuvik
ground station if it does not receive a remote sensing licence from GAC by June 1, 2018.
"We are aware this is an important issue both to Planet Labs and KSAT AS and to the local
community, and we are working to complete the review process as quickly as possible," Sutton
said in an email. "We welcome and will work to support the development of the satellite industry
in Inuvik, which offers important opportunities for economic development for the town and for
the Northwest Territories as a whole."
Mike Safyan, senior director of launch and ground stations for Planet, said the company has been
waiting for a licence for two years.
The licensing process is supposed to take 180 days.
"If we can't get a licence approval by June 1, we're going to start deconstructing those antennas
and moving them elsewhere," Safyan said.
Regional Skills Competition in Inuvik March 1
East Three Secondary School will host the 10th annual Regional Skills Competition organized
by Skills Canada March 1.
High school students from Inuvik, Ulukhaktok, Paulatuk, Aklavik and the Sahtu region will take
part in cooking, baking, hairstyling, carpentry, sewing, photography, recreation equipment, and
fashion technology skills competitions.
Medal winners are eligible to advance to the Territorial Skills Competition in Yellowknife,
where they will then compete for the chance to go to the national competition.
"The whole purpose of these competitions is to get kids trying skills out and developing some
skill," said Skills Canada NWT executive director Allison Kincaid. "It's not all about winning.
It's about participating and developing your skill. Many of the students that compete will end up
pursuing a career in the particular industry they competed in."
"The idea is to say to kids that there are a lot of jobs in the trades," Kincaid said. "There are a lot
of jobs that need people desperately and you can fill those jobs, and here's how to do it."
The competition will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is open to the public.
Last year, Karis Dekuant of Inuvik won the gold medal in the baking competition at the Skills
Canada National Skills Competition.
