Inuvik Food Bank got a much-needed financial boost over the summer from the community to keep its shelves stocked and even replace old freezers and refrigerators, including a $15,000 donation of credit at Northmart.
Food Bank board chair Angela McInnes said they were able to replace a freezer thanks to a previous donation and were about to purchase three much-needed appliances when they were offered the credit with the local grocer.
"It's paying for all our food," said McInnes. "When we got the money for the freezer from Kristian Binder, we started getting the rest of our stuff, the fridges and the other standing freezer.
"We figured we were going to have to pay for it, but then we found out we have this $15,000 credit. It really gave us a nice boost and the fact that we're able to buy the rest of the appliances and we're able to consistently buy food.
"It's really helpful."
Now, with two fully functional fridges and a backroom packed full of food, McInnes figured the food bank had enough resources to keep its operation going until September as the summer is typically slower than the winter.
She said on average the bank supplies 100 people around town with food, alternating every second week of the month with the Arctic Food Bank.
"We have it broken down by the number of adults and children in the home," she said. "We are able to keep up over the summer, but during the winter we could use more help."
While the bank will always need more donations to maintain its operations, at this point they're also in need of volunteers, either as drivers, packers or other odd jobs.
