Fire destroys Airport Lake Cabin

Smoke is seen rising from a structure fire at a cabin across Airport Lake on June 26. ENR crews have been dispatched to the site and the Inuvik Fire Chief says there is no risk to the public.

A structure fire destroyed a cabin on Airport Lake early June 26 and smoke from the inferno was still visible from the Dempster Highway as of noon the same day as GNWT crews battled the blaze.

Public Safety director Cynthia Hammond told Inuvik Drum the fire department was called out to the site at 3:46 a.m. and sent two apparatus and seven personnel to combat it.

As the fire was across the lake, the fire department concluded the fire was not accessible by their equipment and called out the GNWT Environment and Natural resources to respond, as the fire had spread to the surrounding flora.

No injuries have been reported and ENR deployed a fire crew to the site as of 10:30 a.m.

Hammond added while the fire is still being battled, it is slow moving and of no risk to the public.
