Fire crews are battling a 254-hectare blaze 12 kilometres south of Inuvik.
Smoke could be seen from Inuvik as late as 10 p.m. June 26 when the fire was reported. At that time, the fire was approximately 10 hectares in size. But two days later, extreme dry conditions and high winds spread the fire to 110 hectares and several more pillars of smoke had emerged.
Inuvik Fire department has installed sprinklers on structures in the area, including the Gwich'in Wellness Camp.

GNWT Wildfire Information Officer Amber Simpson said two fire crews and two helicopters were initially deployed to the site. Now, six ground crews and two overhead crews are attacking the site of the fire with the assistance of two helicopters and an air tanker group.
No damage or injuries have been reported at this time. Simpson said the fire is now 80 per cent contained and was expected to be 90 per cent under control by the end of June 29.
Inuvik Fire Department released a smoke advisory as a precaution in case wind blew smoke towards the town.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and is under investigation.
