Inuvik has pulled back staff loaned to the Government of the Northwest Territories' isolation centre at the Mackenzie Hotel and Mike Zubko airport as of May 1 and the government will have to pick up where they left off.
Mayor Natasha Kulikowski told council the town had served notice during their April 27 Committee of the Whole meeting.
"We are finding at this point in time, for operations for the town we still have our day jobs that we need to do," said senior administrative officer Grant Hood. "This will be six weeks that the town has been doing the coordination at both the airport and isolation centre.
"We feel that it's time to turn it over to the GNWT. They are running the other three isolation centres."
Hood added the town's isolation centre had 18 people staying there as of press time.
"Overall, I have to commend the staff and employees of the town who have worked very hard to accomplish what we've done," said Hood. "We've established some very good protocols and what I feel is very good protection for not only Inuvik but the outlying communities."
