Fitness boot camp is back in Inuvik

Faye d'Eon Eggertson, Nicole Lindsay, Stacey Christie, Tess Forbes, Leslie Pasco, Darby Desrosiers, Maryssa Camacho, Anica Jenks and Samuel Dyck strike a pose before kicking off the return of Inuvik Boot Camp, running Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7 p.m. at East Three School.

After a long, cold and dark winter, Inuvik's free fitness gathering is back on schedule.

Meeting every Tuesdays and Thursdays, Inuvik Bootcamp is a half-hour blast of cardio that has drawn residents out to get their sweat on for years.

Originally hosted by Mayor Natasha Kulikowski, the outdoor phase one reboot of circuit training was spearheaded by Faye d'Eon-Eggertson.

"I realized that this was something that could be done in compliance with the new rules," said d'Eon-Eggertson. "I missed the generally being social with other people rather than the exercise itself, but I think the group aspect is good motivation and makes it more fun.

"Also doing squats with a group in a park seems less weird than doing squats on your own in a park."

Each class, eight stations with exercises are set up and groups of two or three move between them in one-minute intervals. After everyone has done each exercise once, people take a quick breather and do it all again. After three rounds, just about everyone's hearts are pounding.

d'Eon-Eggertson said she was happy to get the group out and moving again, but noted she would not be able to run the workout forever and said the group would need another volunteer to step up and guide the class.

"I'm not the official leader or anything, and I won't be able to be there every week over the summer," she said. "So it would be great if other people could run them. All I used for the one I ran was an interval timer app on my phone and some sidewalk chalk."

Bootcamp runs every Tuesday and Thursday at the East Three School basketball courts and is completely free. Participants should make sure to wear breathable clothing, good footwear and plenty of water to drink.
