Two new fires have been reported by NWT Fire on Monday afternoon.

One of them is in the Dehcho around 40 km south of Fort Simpson near Check Point on Highway 1 at the Liard junction known as FS005. It currently sits 40 km west of Jean Marie River and has been measured at less than one hectare in size. Fire crews are on scene trying to get it under control.

FS004 near the Fort Providence Junction and Highway 7 Junction continues to burn on both sides of the highway. Jean Marie River is the closest affected community, nearly 70 km northwest and several properties along the highway are at risk, according to NWT Fire.

Two structures have already been confirmed lost as a result of this fire and teams and equipment are working to stop it from growing to the east. Hand-torching is happening along Highway 1 to burn off vegetation to help reduce the impacts of smoke.

The fire has forced the closure of Highway 1 between kilometre 188 and kilometre 457, which includes the junction of Highway 1/Highway 3 and the Liard River Ferry.

Meanwhile, a brand new fire, called SS007, has been detected west of Enterprise and it's being monitored. It is approximately 40 km west of the community and is currently of no risk to communities, cabins, or infrastructure as of Monday evening.

SS005 sits approximately 9 km northwest of Enterprise and measures less than one hectare in size. It's considered to be under control and is also being monitored. It, too, is currently of no risk to communities, cabins, or infrastructure.
