NWT Ski Day will be celebrated on Feb. 14 with trail fees waived all day at the Hay River Ski Club.

"So anyone who doesn't have a membership is welcome to come out and they can ski, snowshoe, toboggan for free throughout the day," said Julia Gyapay, the events co-ordinator with the club.

Gyapay said NWT Ski Day will be a chance for people to see what skiing is all about, along with the other activities offered at the Hay River Ski Club.

She said the trails are open to snowshoers, there is a new tobogganing hill and people can walk, ski or snowshoe with their dogs on a new dog trail.

"The ski club isn't just skiing," she said. "It's much more than that."

Gyapay said NWT Ski Day will also offer free rental equipment for non-members of the club.

"So if they don't have skis or snowshoes, we have both of those for children and adults," she said. "It's a great way to come out and explore the facility and explore our amazing trails for free."

Since NWT Ski Day happens to fall on Feb. 14, there will also be a Family Valentine's Ski, beginning at 1:30 p.m. It will involve a short ski on some newly opened trails to a cabin on the other side of the Hay River.

This year, the Hay River Ski Club is joining other clubs in Fort Smith, Yellowknife and Inuvik in celebrating NWT Ski Day.

The club received a grant from the NWT Recreation and Parks Association to allow it to waive trail fees for the day.

"The whole purpose is that, if you've never skied before or even if you remotely considered skiing, but you don't have a membership and you'd like to discover the trails and explore our facility, this is your chance," said Gyapay. "So it's their chance to stay physically active and to come out and have fun on skis with their friends and family."

Along with the waived fees and free rentals, she said that non-members will get information about the trails and receive assistance with equipment, such as how to wax skis.

"We'll be there to answer questions," Gyapay said, adding that help will start being offered at 1 p.m. on Feb. 14.
