Remembrance Day ceremonies return to Royal Canadian Legion

Remembrance Day ceremonies will be back at the Royal Canadian Legion on Nov. 11 after a year's absence.

Last year, the ceremonies were held at Princess Alexandra School.

"It is an honour," said Blake Lawrence, the president of Branch 250 of the Royal Canadian Legion, of hosting the annual ceremonies.

As usual, the ceremonies will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 11 on the second floor of the Legion.

However for the first time this year, there will be a viewing screen set up on the main floor of the building so people with mobility issues can watch the ceremonies without having to be helped upstairs.

"Then they'll be able to sit in here and watch it," said Lawrence while being interviewed in the main floor meeting room. "We've never done that before."

The Legion president noted the viewing screen will be for people in wheelchairs and some elderly people.

However, Lawrence noted he has asked some members of the Hay River Fire Department to be on hand to help carry people up the stairs, if they wish.

Like at every Legion across the country, Branch 250 is encouraging people in Hay River to wear poppies in memory of the fallen in war and to honour veterans.

Lawrence believes it is important to wear a poppy.

"It just shows the veterans that you care," he said. "That's why I wear red on Friday, every Friday, because it's support for our troops."

Contributions received from the poppy campaign directly support veterans and their families.

This Remembrance Day marks 99 years since an armistice ended the First World War at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.
