News briefs: Free movie showing, firefighter calls defined

Free showing of new movie

Growing Together will present a free showing of the animated movie Ferdinand at the Riverview Cineplex on Dec. 18.

Families and caregivers with at least one child five years of age and under can attend. Older siblings are also welcome.

Doors open at 10 a.m. and the movie starts at 10:30 a.m.

Firefighter calls to be defined

A clarification of what a "call" means will be added to the Fire Prevention Bylaw after a debate at town council on Nov. 28.

Deputy mayor Donna Lee Jungkind asked for clarification of a "call' for which firefighters are paid $25 each.

"Is that per call like an actual fire call, or is that per meeting?" she said. "That's a question that I've been asked several times actually from different residents over the years and never really knew the answer to."

Fire Chief Ross Potter said that is per function, and could be things like a fire call, a false alarm or training.

"So I guess what I'm wondering is if we should have that clearly stated in the bylaw, because this is saying per call and where is the definition of what a call is?" said Jungkind.

Judy Goucher, the town's senior administrative officer, said a definition would be added to the updated bylaw, which passed first and second reading on Nov. 28.

Coun. Vince McKay, a captain on the fire department, expressed concern that defining the word might be the start of council "micromanaging" the department.

Family sliding event planned

A family sliding event is planned for Dec. 16 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Bob McMeekin Chamber Park.

People can bring their own sleds or borrow inflatable tubes.

The activity is being presented by the recreation and community services division of the Town of Hay River.
