NEWS BRIEFS: Committee to host recycling celebration

The Hay River Beautification Committee is hosting a Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Celebration from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 13 at Aurora College's Hay River Community Learning Centre.

People are being invited to bring their ideas and share their creative recycling projects.

There will also be information tables and displays.

The event will also feature a complimentary soup and bannock lunch. (People should bring their own utensils.)

 

Hub artist to host Yellowknife workshop

Chris Robson, an artist from Hay River, will be hosting a printmaking workshop and tour of his woodblock prints and drawings Ingrained Landmarks, currently on display at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre in Yellowknife.

The free event will take place on the afternoon of Oct. 14 with the workshop and demonstrations and an artist talk and tours.

It will introduce participants to woodblock and lino printmaking.

 

New chief public health officer named

Dr. Kami Kandola has been appointed the new chief public health officer for the NWT, effective Oct. 1.

She replaces Dr. Andre Corriveau, who assumed the role of the Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority's acting medical director on Sept. 1 for a period of one year.

Kandola has served as the NWT's deputy chief public health officer since 2011 and was the chief medical health officer from 2009 to 2011.

The appointment was announced by Health and Social Services Minister Glen Abernethy.

 

Fire department plans open house

The Hay River Fire Department will be hosting an open house to celebrate Fire Prevention Week.

The open house is set from 5-8 p.m. on Oct. 11.

Among other things, it will feature a vehicle extrication demonstration.

Fire Prevention Week began on Oct. 7 and will run until Oct. 13.

 

Proposed cannabis bylaw coming soon

A proposed cannabis bylaw is expected to be presented for first reading at town council on Oct. 23.

Council was told at its Oct. 2 meeting to expect the bylaw, which will set rules on where cannabis can be smoked in the community.

Cannabis will be legal in Canada as of Oct. 18.
