NEIGHBOURLY NEWS: Three in running to be mayor of Fort Smith

Three people are running to be mayor of Fort Smith in the upcoming municipal elections.

Incumbent Mayor Lynn Napier-Buckley is being challenged by former mayor Brad Brake and Don Matthews.

Fifteen candidates have also put their names forward to fill the eight seats on council.

They are incumbents Al Dumont, Ron Holtorf, Bob McArthur, Kevin Smith and Brenda Tuckey. The other candidates are Louise Beaulieu, Kevin Campbell, Michael Couvrette, Jessica Cox, Ray Currie, Chris DeWolf, Gerard Fradsham, Keith Hartery, Ann Pischinger and Chris Westwell.

The names of the nominees were released on Sept. 17.

The municipal elections in Fort Smith will be held on Oct. 15.

An all-candidates forum will be held on Oct. 1, beginning at 7 p.m. at Roaring Rapids Hall.

The forum is being sponsored by the Union of Northern Workers and the Thebacha Chamber of Commerce.

 

Regional futsal camp in Smith

The NWT Soccer Association will be running a futsal development camp in Fort Smith from Sept. 28 to Sept. 30.

The camp is for male and female players born between 2003 and 2008.

Registration and more information, including on the fee, is available online at the website of the NWT Soccer Association.

Futsal is a variation of indoor soccer.

 

Art workshop in Enterprise

Enterprise

An art workshop and showcase for youth will take place in Enterprise on Oct. 3, beginning at 7 p.m. in the Enterprise Community Centre.

The facilitators will be Kiera Kolson, an award-winning multidisciplinary artist and Blaire Russell, a photographer, filmmaker and educator.

Students from Enterprise will showcase their creations after working with the established artists and elders.

The free showcase is a community outreach project of the Northern Arts & Cultural Centre in Yellowknife.
