On Sept. 13, Aurora College launched its 50th anniversary celebrations, and unveiled a new anniversary logo.

The logo was officially unveiled on one of Northwestern Air Lease Ltd.'s Jetstream 32 aircraft. It will display the logo for the 2018-2019 academic year.

Northwestern Air Lease Ltd. is a major sponsor of Aurora College's anniversary celebrations.

Later on Sept. 13, community residents were invited to a free barbecue at Thebacha Campus to welcome students to Fort Smith and to Aurora College, and to officially launch the 50th anniversary celebrations.

The barbecue featured guest speakers, historical photos, a slide show of photos of former students and staff, and an opportunity to purchase 50th anniversary clothing and keepsake items.

Special anniversary events will also be held at Aurora Campus in Inuvik on Sept. 19 and at Yellowknife North Slave Campus on Sept. 21.

 

Fort Smith to hold annual fall cleanup

The Town of Fort Smith will hold its annual Residential Fall Clean-Up from Sept. 25 to Sept. 29.

No vehicles will be collected, although vehicle disposal tipping fees will be waived at the landfill for households for the duration of the fall clean-up.

No household hazardous waste, such as propane tanks, batteries, paint and used oils will be collected.

Welcome back for college students

The Town of Fort Smith will be hosting an event to welcome new and returning Aurora College students to the community.

The Fort Smith Block Party, which is open to everyone in the community, will be held at the Rec Centre from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 22.

The event will feature a free barbecue, kids' activities and music.

There will also be vendors and artists displaying their work.
