As of Feb. 22, the swimming pool remained closed due to a mechanical problem.

"The whirlpool and steam room are open, but the pool remains closed," said Stephane Millette, director of recreation with the Town of Hay River.

The pool was closed on Jan. 29 following the mechanical failure of the main pool pump.

It has been sent to Calgary to be rebuilt by the supplier.

"It hasn't been returned. It's still at the supplier," said Millette. "And they're waiting on a part. Once they receive that part then they can put it in and ship it back to Hay River."

The rec director couldn't estimate when the pool might reopen.

"That's why we're simply stating that the pool is closed until further notice," he said.

The main pump circulates water in the pool. As it is circulated, the water is filtered and chlorine is added.

No estimate is available on the cost of the repairs.

Among other things, the unexpected closure has affected regular users of the pool and those planning to take swimming lessons, which will be rescheduled.

During the closure, the town is doing some staff training, along with some cleaning and maintenance that are not done on a regular basis.

The last seasonal closure at the pool was last fall.
