Hay Riverites run for fun in 36-below wind chill

You know dedicated runners when they show up for a fun run at 9 a.m. on New Year's Day, even when the wind chill is minus 36.

Participants in the 2018 Resolution Fun Run on Jan. 1 were bundled up against the cold just before heading out on 2K or 5K runs. The runners were, left to right, Jayda Robillard, Scott Spencer, Shelley Maher, Jenn Touesnard, Sherry Ringuette, Gilles Ringuette and Kyle Camsell. photo courtesy of Sherry Ringuette

Seven of them did indeed turn out for the 2018 Resolution Fun of either 2K or 5K.

Organizer Sherry Ringuette, who also ran two kilometres, said it was a way to start off the new year right.

"It was really nice, actually," she said when asked what it was like to run when the wind chill is at minus 36. "When you're dressed for it, it's not that cold."

She did the 2K run because she hasn't been running much recently.

"So the 2K was a nice way to kind of start the new year and get back into it," she said.

Ringuette was pleased with the number of participants, especially since it was so cold.

"It was a morning run so people could still enjoy the rest of their New Year's Day plans," she said. "I was pretty happy with seven people."

Three of the runners did 2K, while the four others completed 5K starting from the headquarters of the Northwest Territories Power Corporation.

Scott Spencer completed the 5K run.

"It was a beautiful day," he said. "The run was easy. I had a balaclava on, but I didn't even cover my mouth."

Spencer said the run was quite comfortable, although he noted he did get a little bit of frostbite on an earlobe, which he described as just a little redness.

"I know there are runners in town that run regularly regardless of the cold," he said. "I typically don't run when it's below minus 20, but I braved it that day and you just get used to it."

The 2018 Resolution Fun Run was the second such event organized by Ringuette.

A Halloween 5K Fun Run on Oct. 28 attracted 16 walkers and runners, many of them in costume for the event.

Ringuette is now hoping to organize a 5K and 10K fun run for sometime in April.

"That would be a nice time," she said. "The weather should start to be nice by then."
