The town's swimming pool reopened on March 9, after an extended closure because of a mechanical failure.

The pool was closed on Jan. 29 after the main pool pump failed.

The pump was then sent to Calgary, rebuilt by the supplier and sent back to Hay River.

"The pump arrived on (March 5) and a local contractor did the installation," said recreation director Stephane Millette late last week. "Then we've had the pump running and doing the checks, putting it through its motions and making sure it's running well.

"And it has been running well and the water is up to temperature now. Chemical levels are all good."

Millette said the closure was longer than expected by the recreation department.

"My understanding is the supplier had trouble getting parts and there were a couple of unforeseens with the supplier in Alberta in trying to rebuild the pump," he said.

Millette noted the public was very understanding during the closure, adding that was appreciated by the town's recreation department.

"We've had lots of questions, obviously, but not much for complaints," he said. "I think people understand that things do break sometimes. The unfortunate thing in this situation, once the break did happen, it was out of our hands."

The main pump circulates water in the pool. As it is circulated, the water is filtered and chlorine is added.

Millette could not provide an estimate on the cost of the repairs.

During the closure, the town did some staff training, along with some cleaning and maintenance of the swimming pool.
